ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Jesmil M. Maldonado Rodríguez was born and raised in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. She pursued her bachelor’s degree in Arts at The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Maldonado received her degree with honors in June 2016. Embarking on her journey in January 2017 to acquire a Master’s in Fine Arts. She is currently pursuing her degree at The University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley with a concentration in two–dimensional work and two minors; one in Design and the other in three–dimensional work. Maldonado’s artwork is inspired by creating patterns and forms that interact with the human figure, insects and floral organisms that represent the neglection of memories and emotions.

This piece represents “the barriers I put around me to prevent people from hurting me or getting to know me entirely. I’ve always hidden many things for fear of rejection and abandonment. The use of skulls as flowers is a way for me to express my humor and the way I wouldn’t mind having a bouquet—a flower arrangement shouldn’t be waited upon, you should treat yourself to one.”

Imagen corporal y la aceptación de ésta es un problema con el cual aún lucho, el utilizar el cuerpo humano en mi obra no es tan sólo una fascinación artística sino un interés científico en cómo crece vive, muere, su descomposición y cómo se vuelve fertilizante para nuestra tierra. Aquí es donde Kaleidoscopic Corpse juega su papel al distraer al espectador con su fondo colorido y melancólico que me recuerda a los colores de mi Isla.

Periplaneta Blossom is a representation of how something negative can be overcome and turned into something beautiful. The flower pattern is made using images of cockroaches and represents the hardship my mother and best friend faced after Hurricane Maria and how they persevered, survived, and helped others. The ink served to manifest my anxiety, and the patterns helped me managed it.

My Dead Conception es cuando comienzo a aceptar la muerte como un fenómeno natural en nuestras vidas. Cuando pensaba en la misma el miedo y la ansiedad se apoderaban de mí como cuando veía un ciempiés. Este artrópodo se ha transformado en la representación visual de mis temores y el hecho de que se repita en mi obra junto a otros elementos orgánicos es mi forma de manejar mis problemas y preocupaciones.

Incommunicados: 20 de Septiembre de 2017 represents how hopeless I felt when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. My biggest fear had come to life, and I wasn’t with my family. During those days I overworked myself and found an excuse to not go to my apartment because loneliness never felt so tangible.

Busco mi verdadero ser mientras busco aceptar la persona que veo en el espejo. Mantodea Feminine Host es una carta para mí, la cual expresa todas las cosas que pienso sobre mi cuerpo cuando observo mi reflejo y cómo esta se transforma en un fondo como mis pensamientos, emociones e inseguridades cuando permanezco en silencio y los ignoro. La integración de caligrafía en mi trabajo es un mecanismo que me ayuda a sanar y aceptar mis fallas al colocarlo en palabras es una forma de confrontar estos problemas y continuar creando obras que se han tornado en mi terapia y estilo de vida.
